Personality.
Margaery’s personality can be rather malleable depending on present company, as she’s comfortable reading what the other person might want to hear or see and proceeding to fulfill those desires. However, her intentions are never to hurt or betray, but rather gain power in her own way, in a world where it’s necessary to survive.

Despite her quietly slippery nature, she is first and foremost dedicated to her family. She never states why exactly she’d like to be the queen so much, but it may very well be to tie her family name into the finer threads of history where only royalty sits; it’s also mentioned that her father wants her to be queen, which could mean Margaery has taken his desires as her own.

As the daughter of a great house, she embodies all the qualities an ideal noble would strive for (gentle, kind, well-spoken, generous, intelligent, easygoing in temper), and as a woman who holds a fervent aspiration to be queen, has an unwavering confidence no matter what situations may come her way. For instance, when she walks into a room with the king pointing a crossbow in her direction and leveling her with derisive accusations, she’s able to expertly maneuver the conversation until she’s the one holding the crossbow and he’s looking at her with admiration rather than suspicion.

(Much of this can be attributed to her grandmother, who has noted that Margaery is “even better” than she was at her age and also proves to embody the “family first” mentality when she murders the king for her granddaughter’s safety.)

And as underhanded as her ability to manipulate might seem, Margaery also subconsciously holds onto a code of honor. She dies as she’s trying to ensure her brother’s safety because she doesn’t fathom how far Cersei is willing to go until it’s too late. Even with all the conflicts the two share, Margaery never once thinks to assassinate Cersei or use force to get her out of the way. She’s one of the very few characters in Game of Thrones who’s gotten as far as she did without needing to kill anyone or order anyone to be killed, which is something of a miracle.

TL;DR: empathetic, ambitious, clever, charismatic, manipulative, calculating, generous.
background.
I didn't anticipate I'd ever play Margaery again, especially in the year of our lord 2025, but here's a real proper rundown for those who may not be canon familiar! Buckle up, here we go.

What Game of Thrones is about:

The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros are ruled by Robert Baratheon after he's led a successful rebellion that unseated the last king (a “mad king” who was killed by his own guard). But he's a better warrior than ruler, and ends up dying before he’s told that his children are all illegitimate heirs, fathered by the queen’s brother. Thus begins a war of succession, as the King’s brothers both claim rights to the throne while the queen’s firstborn, Joffrey, occupies it despite the persistent rumors against his legitimacy. Simultaneously, the massive region of the North rises up against the crown for having executed their beloved Warden, while the mad king's daughter plots her return from afar.

What follows are wars with open battles, and political games to be played in and out of court, which can be even more dangerous than marching into battle at times, as the enemy is never kind enough to attack with honor. Some families (and terribly sly characters with no great name to speak of) depend on secrets, savagery and betrayal to thrive, which often means danger for the more decent people who do their best to survive this world where power is the ultimate goal and the prize for second place is death. And yet, not even having that power can keep someone safe, as it’s demonstrated by the numerous prominent figures who are murdered for one reason or another after they've achieved their goals.

Margaery's Life in a Nutshell:

- Margaery is born to Lady Alerie and Lord Mace Tyrell in 283 AC at Highgarden, a privileged daughter of one of the Great Houses in the realm.

- When she first appears in canon, she’s married Renly Baratheon, one of late king Robert’s brothers vying for the Iron Throne, and currently encamped with his forces as they prepare to fight against Stannis Baratheon – his older brother.

- Renly is assassinated by a shadow demon sent from Stannis’ red priestess. Margaery and her family end up allying with the current king, Joffrey Baratheon, and their support proves to be instrumental in winning The Battle of the Blackwater.

- Out of gratitude, Joffrey permits Loras, Margaery’s brother, to request anything of him. Loras’ request is for Joffrey to marry Margaery and once the king agrees, she replaces Sansa Stark as future queen.

- During her time at the capital, she continually garners the love and support from the people through charity and donations – which makes Joffrey’s mother, Cersei, grow increasingly wary of her. Especially when she sees how easily Margaery is able to manipulate Joffrey, something she’s realized she’s incapable of doing herself.

- Margaery marries Joffrey in a grand and glorious wedding, where he ends up being poisoned and dying even before the reception is finished. It’s not long before she finds herself engaged to Tommen, Joffrey’s younger brother. Young and impressionable, Tommen proves to be much easier for her to manipulate, both before and after their wedding.

- Unfortunately, these same qualities also prove him to be absolutely worthless as a king when Loras is arrested by the Faith Militant (backed by Cersei in a grand scheme to bring down the Tyrells) for his “sins”. When Margaery attends Loras’ trial and supports his innocence, she is also arrested for providing false testimony.

- Despite long weeks spent in a dark cell, with implied beatings and other forms of torture, Margaery stays strong. She’s able to think clearly enough to recognize this new game she must play with the Faith Militant, and also realize that she must pretend to be reformed if she ever wishes to save her brother.

- Her acting fools even her grandmother at one point, who clearly worries that Margaery has forsaken her family, but a secret note with a rose (their house sigil) helps her understand otherwise.

- Despite her clever ways, Margaery meets her end at her brother’s trial, when Cersei (who now also has reason to fear and hate the Faith Militant she installed) blows up the Sept where they all are. :(

mafia/crime. A wealthy corporation, especially one as big as the one I'm imagining for the Tyrells, won't have clean hands. While Margaery may not pull the trigger herself (poison would probably be her choice), she will happily present herself as a friend and ally to those who are more than capable of doing so. Her family won't be above funding illicit activities such as smuggling - or perhaps they, house of flowers and agriculture, supply large quantities of the loveliest poppies and other means of producing and exporting drugs? Governments also track certain medications because they're so often abused/powerful, so their company could be a major supplier on the downlow.

other fantasy canons. I'm not 100% familiar with many other canons, but super happy to mash some details together from fellow fantastical canons like HOTD, Witcher, Shadow & Bone, LOTR, etc. Never read ASOIAF, but happy to use elements from it.

supernatural. Margaery as a monsterfucker would be amazing, but also open to having her be/become the monster. PLS LET ME TRY WRITING HER AS A VAMPIRE.......

modern. When all else fails, there's this one. or aka, the AUs where the Tyrells aren't a crime family (by definition although lbr they'd still be gaming the system); happy to supplement details that make the assumed CR easier as we go along! in these, marg would most likely be a publicist/public relations specialist, marketing genius, etc.

other. Scifi, dystopian, apocalyptic, I love them all, please come at me with any ideas you might have and I'll be happy to plot with you.

shipping. Yes! Beloved tropes include: bodyguard, arranged marriage, "you are my weakness", and enemies to lovers. My inbox is open and I'm always down for crosscanon/medium.

smut. Yes, also happy to ftb! Margaery is a switch. Usual hard nos apply: bathroom kinks, vore, torture, underage characters.

writing prefs. Brackets in present tense - prose might happen, but it'll definitely take me a good while longer. Longer tags preferred over shorter ones.

opt out. Please feel free to leave a comment below to OPT OUT of being tagged by Margaery! Comments are screened, no questions asked.
